Behringer is a value brand. If you want to spend as little money as possible for good quality equipment, you can consider Behringer. The company’s effects processors and compressors are pretty good. So, there is a good reason to consider Behringer MS20 or Behringer MS40 for a pair of near-field monitors. They are quite affordable, and they seem to be good enough for both casual listening and serious monitoring. Behringer MS20 and Behringer MS40 share a lot of resemblances to each other. They are both painted in black. They have this glossy finish that enhances their appearance. Their LF drivers, however, are white. On the right speaker of each pair, you can find an onboard EQ with bass and treble control knobs and two volume knobs for Line 1/Digital and Line 2. There are also the power button, power indicator, and headphone jack.

Behringer MS20 is significantly smaller and lighter than Behringer MS40. If you have very limited space, you may want to consider getting the most compact option available. Behringer MS20 measures 6” wide, 7.375” deep, and 9.4” tall. The right speaker is 8.14 lbs, whereas the left speaker is 4.51 lbs. The right speaker is heavier than the left speaker due to containing more modules.

On both models, the input signals are received by the right speaker. It transfers the signals to the left speaker using an audio cable. For quiet monitoring, the right speaker features a headphone jack which is easily accessible next to the EQ knobs. So, you won’t have to change connectors to swap between speakers and headphones, and it also eliminates the need for a DAC.

Behringer MS20 has smaller LF drivers and lower power. The LF driver is 3.625”. It does not produce deep bass as the frequency response only extends between 65 Hz – 25 kHz. Between these two models, Behringer MS40 is the better choice. It offers better bass quality and output power. Apparently, Behringer MS20 is meant to be a more space-friendly option, but the performance is not very good.
