Are you confused in choosing between Edifier R1280T vs Mackie CR3? These two products are both affordable bookshelf speakers suitable for a variety of purposes. Edifier R1280T is a pair of near-field monitor speakers that can give you detailed and accurate sound, suitable for both casual listening and professional monitoring. On the other hand, Mackie CR3 marketed as a pair of “multimedia monitors” suitable for entertainment and multimedia creation. So, which one is better?
These two speaker models are about the same size. Edifier R1280T is slightly slimmer, but taller and longer, with the dimensions of 9.5 inches (H) x 5.75 inches (W) x 7 inches (D). It has a front vent with a 4” woofer and a 0.5” tweeter. The MDF wood build is rugged and durable, and the material ensures excellent sound quality. The wood vinyl finish looks very stylish and elegant.
However, the two speakers of Edifier R1280T are not interchangeable. The main speaker, which you connect to the audio source, should be the right speaker. The other speaker is always the left speaker. Make sure that you don’t confuse the position, or you will get a reversed stereo system. Well, take a look at our previous post about Edifier R1280T vs R1700BT here!
On the other hand, Mackie CR3 is slightly smaller. The dimensions are 8.5 inches (H) x 6 inches (W) x 6.5 inches (D). It has a rear vent. On the front side, there is a 3” polypropylene-coated woofer and 0.75” ferrofluid-cooled silk-dome tweeter. It has an all-wood cabinet with a matte black finish. Unlike Edifier R1280T, Mackie CR3’s speakers are interchangeable. You can adjust the main speaker to act as a left or right speaker just by flicking a switch. This is indeed convenient.
Next, Edifier R1280T vs Mackie CR3 have different connection options. Edifier R1280T is more limited because it only has two pairs of RCA inputs. However, you can use both pairs of inputs simultaneously to connect the speaker to two audio sources at the same time, so that you can easily switch between the two sources.Edifier R1280T does not have any 3.5 mm port, but it comes with an aux-to-RCA cable which you can use as an adapter to connect a 3.5 mm device to the RCA ports.
Mackie CR3 has more connection options. On the front side of the main speaker, you can find a 3.5mm aux input and a headphone output. On the rear panel, there is a pair of TRS input ports and a pair of RCA input ports.
Now, how about the performance? Although Edifier R1280T has lower output power, it has better overall sound quality. The total output power is 42 Watts, which is good enough for a small or medium room. The most notable quality is the clear and detailed bass. Edifier R1280T produces more accurate low frequencies that do not muddle the mids and highs. Well, it does have some upper bass boost, but this is not really distracting.
On the other hand, Mackie CR3 is indeed louder and more powerful. However, the frequency response range does not reach down low enough. The bass is strong but it can be distorted at times, especially at high volume levels.
