Edifier R1280T vs Micca PB42X are two different models of affordable powered bookshelf speakers. They are both quite popular on the market. If you have a limited budget to get a pair of decent-sounding speakers, these are great options. Edifier R1280T comes with a very stylish classic wood finish and a rich, balanced sound. On the other hand, Micca PB42X offers a solid build quality and a warm output with a very nice soundstage.
Design and Dimensions
Edifier R1280T requires more surface area, as it measures 5.7” wide and 7.7” deep. The height is about 9.2”. The housing is made of high-quality MDF wood, which promises decent durability and sound quality. IT has a classic wood finish which looks very elegant and stylish. On the front side, you can find a 13 mm silk dome tweeter, a 4-inch woofer, and a vent port. On the side of the main speaker, there is an on-board equalizer panel to adjust the output character. Meanwhile, Micca PB42X is taller, yet it requires less surface area. It measures 5.8” wide, 6.5” deep, and 9.5” tall. It has a ported enclosure to ensure good bass response with low distortion. It features a high-performance 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter and a balanced woven carbon-fiber woofer. Unlike Edifier R1280T, Micca PB42X comes with a simple black color, which enables it to ‘disappear’ in any room décor.
These two speakers have different connection ports. Edifier R1280T comes with two pairs of RCA inputs, which enable you to connect two audio sources simultaneously without having to switch cables. Although there is no 3.5 mm input, there is an aux-to-RCA cable included in the bundle. You can use this cable to connect your mobile devices (which normally use the 3.5 mm jack) to the RCA ports.
On the other hand, Micca PB42X has one 3.5 mm input and a pair of RCA inputs. These connections are perhaps more straightforward, but you won’t be able to connect two audio sources at the same time.
On the side of Edifier R1280T’s primary speaker, there is an on-board equalizer with three control knobs for the bass, treble, and master volume. The EQ control is quite handy and useful for adjusting the output without having to fumble with the software-based equalizer. In addition, Edifier R1280T comes with a remote control which is very convenient to use. On the other hand, Micca PB42X has neither the on-board equalizer nor the remote control; it only has a master volume control on the rear panel.
Edifier R1280T has a more powerful output power with a total of 42 Watts RMS from the pair. Hence, it is a good choice for a medium-sized room. The sound quality is clear and accurate. It is rich, bright, and balanced. However, compared to Micca PB42X, the bass is indeed less impressive.
On the other hand, Micca PB42X is slightly less powerful with a total output power of 30 Watts RMS. So, it is more suitable for a smaller room. Nevertheless, the sound quality is arguably more enjoyable for casual listening. It has a warmer sound and better bass performance. However, it may be too warm for some people, especially if you prefer to hear bright and detailed sounds rather than warm, deep sounds.
