Edifier R1700BT vs Mackie CR4 are affordable studio monitors that are quite popular on the market. Their affordable nature makes them popular for a wide range of uses, though, from casual listening to mixing to gaming. Edifier R1700BT comes with a bigger body, featuring an on-board equalizer. On the other hand, Mackie CR4 features a good set of connection options and a stylish contemporary look. Continue reading below for the detailed comparisons between these two value speakers to determine which one is better.
Design and Size
Between these two models, Edifier R1700BT is the bigger one. It measures 6 inches wide, 8 inches deep, and 9.75 inches tall. It features a 4-inch woofer and a 19mm silk dome tweeter. Under the woofer, it has a front vent hole. Meanwhile, on the side of the primary speaker, there is an onboard equalizer with controls for the treble, bass, and master volume. The housing is made of high-quality MDF wood with an elegant walnut finish. It looks classy and stylish, suitable for any room décor. See our previous post about Edifier R1280T vs R1700BT here!
Mackie CR4 can be a more attractive option if you have limited space due to the smaller design. It measures only 6.1 inches wide, 7.3 inches deep, and 8.8 inches tall. Unlike Edifier R1700BT, Mackie CR4 has a rear vent hole, so make sure that you place it further away from the wall to avoid disruptive resonance. On the front, there is a 4” polypropylene-coated woofer and a 0.75” ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeter. The construction is all wood with a black finish. The drivers are surrounded by green circles to create a stylish look.
As mentioned above, Edifier R1700BT comes with an on-board equalizer. This feature can be very practical in many cases. When listening casually and you think that the sound is not enjoyable, you can just adjust the on-board knobs rather than changing the equalizer in the software. You can also easily adjust the volume level there.
Keep in mind that Edifier R1700BT’s pair is not interchangeable. The main speaker should be the right channel, and the complementary speaker is the left channel. On the rear panel, you can find two pairs of RCA inputs which you can use simultaneously. There is an RCA cable and an RCA-to-AUX cable included in the package. Although the speaker doesn’t have a 3.5 mm port, you can use the cable to connect your smartphone to the RCA ports. There is also a remote control for easy operation.
On the other hand, Mackie CR4 is quite a feature-packed model. It has an interchangeable pair; you can have the main speaker act as either the right or left channel just by flipping a switch. It has multiple input options: 3.5mm aux, TRS, and RCA. The cables are included as well in the bundle.
Mackie CR4 generally has good performance. It is a decent choice for casual listening and gaming. However, it has a big boost in the upper bass region in order to mask the lack of bass under 70 Hz. The bass boost is very apparent. As the effect, sounds like drums and bass guitars become a lot bigger. This is not a desirable thing when monitoring and mixing because you want the sound to be as accurate as possible.
Edifier R1700BT is generally more accurate with better clarity. It also has some bass boost, but this is less pronounced. The overall sound is more accurate and similar to the actual mix quality, so it is better for monitoring and mixing.
