Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 Vs 6i6

We are going to discuss the comparisons between two audio interface devices that are loved by many music makers: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. These two models belong to a similar price range, with Focusrite Scarlett2i4 being a few tens of dollars cheaper than Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. Inputs and Outputs
The first thing that you need to consider when choosing between these two audio interface devices is what inputs and outputs that you actually need. For example, if you only need one input for a guitar and another one for a vocal mic, Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 is probably sufficient. This model has two analog inputs, two ¼” balanced jack outputs, and one headphone output. It also has MIDI I/O. (See also : Steinberg UR22 Vs Focusrite 2i4)

However, if you need inputs for a vocal mic, two guitars, and turntables, Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 should be your choice. This model has four analog inputs, four¼” balanced outputs, two headphone outputs,S/PDIF in and out, and MIDI I/O.As you can see, this model has more connection options.

The next difference between Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 vs 6i6 that you may need to consider is the gain levels of the preamps. Focusrite Scarlett 2i4’s mic preamps have 55 dB gain, whereas Focusrite Scarlett 6i6’s mic preamps have 60 dB gain. They both have excellent sound quality, it is just the gain levels that are different. If you are using a mic with low output power, for example a ribbon mic, you should consider using preamps with higher gain levels.

So, in this case, Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 makes the better choice. However, if you already have dedicated mic preamps that you pair with the low-output mics, you can worry less about the audio interface’s preamp gain.

Both Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 are powered via USB connections. However, Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 is bus powered, which means that it is powered by the same connection that transfers the data to your computer. This is very convenient; you only need one USB connection for both powering and data transfer.

On the other hand, Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 is not bus powered. Hence, it requires two USB connections. One is for data transfer while the other is for power.

Included Software
Each of the two models comes with the Pro Tools Bundle. It includes the First Focusrite Creative Pack, Ableton Live Lite, Focusrite Red plug-in, Softube Time and Tone Bundle, and 2 GB Loopmasters samples.
