Design and Size
Size-wise, JBL LSR308 and Yamaha HS8 are quite similar. After all, they both have eight-inch woofers. JBL LSR308 is a little bit lighter at 22 lbs. It is also a little bit wider and taller, as it measures 10 inches wide, 16-1/2 inches tall, and 12 inches deep. According to the manufacturer, JBL LSR308 is equipped with the Revolutionary Image Control technology for enhanced imaging. This design allows for increased high-frequency detail, greater depth, and greater ambience. It has a room-friendly design with a broad sweet spot, so it can deliver neutral sound to a wide space.
On the other hand, Yamaha HS8 is slightly heavier and deeper. According to Crutchfield, the weight is about 22.5 lbs. It measures 9-13/16 inches wide, 15-3/8 inches tall, and 13-1/8 inches deep. Yamaha HS8 also has a rear bass port. This speaker is known for the excellent build quality.
In addition, the housing is specially designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and noise in order to increase sound accuracy. The projection of the output is not as wide as JBL LSR308, but the sound quality remains good as long as you place the speaker properly.
The features of JBL LSR308 and Yamaha HS8 are quite similar. Both speakers have MDF cabinets with rear ports. Both speakers also have switchable low-frequency cutoff and room acoustic adjustments. Furthermore, both speakers support similar connections, which are balanced XLR and TRS.
However, JBL LSR308 does have more on-board controls. It has an on-board volume control and a selectable input sensitivity. However, the input sensitivity switch is not as flexible as Yamaha HS8’s input gain control.
Yamaha HS8 features a control knob for adjusting the input gain. It allows for more precise adjustment. Nevertheless, both speakers should be compatible with a wide range of audio devices.
In general, both have excellent sound qualities that are suitable for monitoring purposes. Both speakers are flat and accurate. They can easily show any flaw or mistake that exists in the mix.
However, Yamaha HS8 is a little bit flatter and more revealing. The difference is subtle, but still makes a good point to consider. Besides, Yamaha HS8 has a higher RMS power rating, which is 120 Watts. AS a comparison, JBL LSR308 has an RMS power rating of 112 Watts.

Both of these two speakers are very good choices. However, Yamaha HS8 still makes a better choice due to the better sound quality. It is also more powerful. You may find the input gain control to be more precise, too.
