M-Audio AV40 Vs AV42

After a considerable success with M-Audio AV40, the company has released a new model, M-Audio AV42. These are two pairs of studio monitor speakers that are quite popular on the market, loved by many users due to their excellent performance. As for the moment, both products are available around similar prices. So, how do they compare against each other? Which is the one that holds the fullest value for the money?

M-Audio has dedicated a considerable amount of effort in redesigning AV40 into AV42. One issue with AV40 is that some users find it a little bit too bulky and too heavy. As the effect, it is not very portable and kind of tricky to place. However, AV42 is a major improvement. From 14 lbs of weight, AV42 only weighs around 7.6 lbs. Such significant difference is caused by the different materials used. While M-Audio AV40 makes use of wooden cabinet, M-Audio AV42 is now built from a special medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and special interior reinforcement that absorbs and minimizes vibration and distortion. AV42 is also noticeably smaller and more compact than AV40. So, portability is no longer an issue with M-Audio AV42.

However, do not mistake the improvement as a compromise in durability. In fact, M-Audio AV42 has been designed more sophisticatedly for better ruggedness and performance. M-Audio AV42 introduces flexible woofers and tweeters, which are more tolerant to vibrations and impacts. The Optimage IV Tweeter Wave Guide enhances the quality of the produced mids and highs to be more accurate and crisp. M-Audio AV40 has a frequency response range of 85 Hz – 20 kHz. As the bass performance is not exactly astonishing, M-Audio AV442 has been designed with a wider frequency response range that spans from 75 Hz – 20 kHz. As we can see, there is quite a considerable improvement on the lower edge of the frequency response range. M-Audio AV42 is able to deliver fuller, more solid, more accurate lows than M-Audio AV40.

M-Audio AV42 removes the grill and now utilizes flexible ferrofluid-cooled silk cones. Therefore, the tweeters are now able to take advantage of the Optimage IV Tweeter Wave Guide technology for superior sound imaging and detail. Thus, not only the bass, the midrange and treble are also improved.
