Even in the era of digital music, turntables remain popular. Some people just want to keep playing their old vinyl records and enjoy the sweet, beautiful sound. If you are currently looking for an affordable turntable, there are two models that are considered as the best options available on the market. They are Music Hall MMF 2.2 and Rega RP1. Both are standing in the same price range. So, what is the difference between Music Hall MMF 2.2 and Rega RP1? Which turntable should you choose?
Design and Features
Music Hall MMF 2.2 is available in two color choices, black and red. It looks solid and rugged, as it features a high-precision bronze and stainless steel bearing assembly. Under the turntable, you can find three special vibration-dampening feet which are very effective in eliminating mechanical vibrations. On top of the turntable are the metal platter and a one-piece alloy tonearm, which offers superior tracking ability. The metal platter is driven by a low-noise fully manual belt driver. Music Hall MMF 2.2 comes equipped with a moving-magnet (MM) phono cartridge.
On the other hand, Rega RP1 is available in white and black color option. Compared to Music Hall MMF 2.2, Rega RP1’s precision main bearing and sub-platter assembly is somewhat slimmer. It also features vibration-dampening feet that perform excellently in preventing noise from mechanical vibrations. However, an important distinction is that unlike Music Hall MMF 2.2, Rega RP1 comes with an all new Phenolic resin flywheel effect platter, which offers superior speed stability. In addition, Rega RP1 also comes with the famous Rega Carbon moving-magnet (MM) cartridge.

Both models indeed deliver great sound quality, but we must say that Rega RP1 sounds noticeably better than Music Hall MMF 2.2. The thing about Rega RP1 is that it has a superior solidity of sound. The audio output is full, solid, and accurate. In addition, the Rega Carbon cartridge is usually considered as a high-quality cartridge. Plus, Rega RP1 is also great for the upgradeability, as there are plenty aftermarket tweak and upgrades available for the model. On the other hand, if you prefer smoother and warmer sound, then you should choose Music Hall MMF 2.2, though you may need to get a cartridge upgrade for the turntable.
