There is no surprise because Tascam DP-008EX is also an eight-track digital recorder and portastudio. In fact, there are indeed quite some similarities between Tascam DP-03SD and Tascam DP-008EX. But, before you make a hasty decision, be aware that there are also key differences between the two. Only one model that can suit you best. Which one is it?
Tascam DP-03SD is a compact and portable digital recorder and portastudio featuring a total of eight audio tracks. Each track has a 2-band EQ support and a dedicated reverb control, thanks to the powerful internal reverb processor. In addition, Tascam DP-03SD also has multi-band mastering effects, chromatic tuner, and metronome. Each track can be edited individually, and there are auto-punch and bounce features. Extending its usability, Tascam DP-03SD comes with a built-in stereo condenser mic that you can utilize as a backup, in case that your primary mics get into some trouble. It has two XLR inputs with phantom power and a pair of ¼” stereo line inputs.
Tascam DP-008EX is similar to Tascam DP-03SD in many ways, except in some parts. It also has eight mono audio tracks, with up to eight tracks for simultaneous playback and up to two tracks for simultaneous recording if you ever need to make a pair of stereo tracks. However, it comes with two combo XLR/TRS inputs, allowing for more versatile compatibility to mics and instruments. Each input also has a +48V phantom power. Mic sensitivity can be selected from two positions, low or high. There are two RCA unbalanced line outputs and a headphone output. Tascam DP-008EX brings a lot of sophisticated features, introducing an automatic analysis mastering function and a direct locate function by using the jog-wheel. Each audio track has independent level, pan, and reverb knobs, as well as 2-band shelving EQ and various effects.
