The two are interesting audio recorder devices, as they have many similarities as well as some differences, yet they are available at quite similar prices. Both models stand in the two-hundred-and-something-bucks class. Worth a note, you can find Zoom R8 to be a little more expensive than Tascam DP-03SD. Tascam DP-03SD features a very compact and lightweight body, measuring only 11.4”x8.2”x2.1” and 4 lbs. It offers eight audio tracks, with 2-band EQ support for each track. It also has various features, including multi-band mastering effects, an internal reverb processor with dedicated control per track, also chromatic tuner and metronome. There are of course track editing functions with auto-punch and bounce features. Thus, with Tascam DP-03SD, you will be able to perform the entire job well. Tascam DP-03SD has two XLR mic inputs with phantom power and a pair of ¼” stereo line inputs, with an instrument level switch. It has a built-in condenser microphone that can serve as a backup, and comes with an optional RC-3F footswitch with three switches for easy punch-in and transport operation.

Zoom R8 also features eight audio tracks. It supports 2-track simultaneous recording and comes with two combo inputs that are compatible with XLR as well as TRS. It also has built-in stereo condenser mics that you can use as a backup plan. For outputs, Zoom R8 has two balanced jacks and a headphone port with a dedicated volume control. Zoom R8 is rich in features, as it comes with 8-voice pad sampler, 140 onboard effects, also built-in metronome, chromatic tuner, onboard rhythm machine, plus a loop-based audio sequencer and a variable playback speed. One neat thing is that you can adjust the playback speed with or without pitch change, which is handy for monitoring more accurately. Zoom R8 provides mixing and transport controls that are compatible to various DAWs, like Cubase, Logic, and Abbleton Live.

Tascam DP-03SD and Zoom R8 both can do well for recording purposes. However, Zoom R8 has richer features and supports than Tascam DP-03SD so that you will find it somehow more convenient and versatile. Thus, Zoom R8 should be the way to go!
