What is actually the difference between Zoom H4n Pro vs H5? If you are currently confused in choosing between these two digital audio recorders, you have come to the right place. You see, the price difference between Zoom H4n Pro and Zoom H5 is quite significant. Zoom H4n Pro already offers excellent sound quality, suitable for virtually any professional purpose. However, Zoom H5 comes with interchangeable mic capsules and extended battery life. These two models are suitable for different people with different needs and preferences.
Zoom H4n Pro
Zoom H4n Pro is not just a cosmetic upgrade to the original Zoom H4n. It comes with several important improvements. It comes with a rubberized casing which greatly enhances the handling. For sure, it is more convenient to hold and less likely to slip off. It now has a bluish display instead of the previous orange. But the most important changes are the locking input ports and upgraded amps. The locking inputs ensure that the cables will stay in place, and the upgraded amps make the sound quality comparable to Zoom H5 and Zoom H6 (see the comparisons between Zoom H4N vs H5 here).
Zoom H4n Pro features a pair of built-in X/Y microphones for capturing the best stereo sound. It also has two XLR/TRS combo inputs for connecting external mics or other devices. So, it has four input channels, all of which support recording at 24-bit/96 kHz. There are two output channels.
One special feature of Zoom H4n Pro is that it has a remote control. Zoom H5 does not have this feature. With the remote control, you can control the recorder from a distance. It is especially useful for solo projects. In addition, Zoom H4n Pro is actually better than Zoom H5 for multi-tracking because it allows you to add a new track from any input.
Zoom H4n Pro requires a memory card for storage. It supports memory cards up to 32 GB. It also requires a pair of AA batteries, and it can last for about 6 – 10 hours per set.
Choosing between Zoom H4n Pro vs H5 is not a straightforward decision because there are pros and cons on the higher model. One advantage of Zoom H5 is the interchangeable mic capsules. You can replace the mic capsules to suit different purposes. The mic capsules have a shock mount which effectively reduces handling noise. In addition, there is a selectable -20dB pad for the inputs, which is handy for handling loud voices.
However, Zoom H5 is not very good for multi-tracking because it requires you to add from a different input for each track.
Zoom H5 also requires a memory card for storage, and is compatible with memory cards up to 32 GB. It runs on two AA batteries. The battery life is quite impressive. It can last for about 15 hours per set of batteries.
